The Art of Making DLD Visible

The Art of Making DLD Visible

Tomorrow, Friday 16 October, people around the world will come together for #DLDday under the theme Together for DLD. Tonight, we’re celebrating with a conversation about creativity, connection and the experience behind this year’s campaign.

In this episode of The Talking DLD Podcast, Dr Shaun Ziegenfusz is joined by Frankie Boyle, Experiential Light Artist and adult with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

For Frankie, light, colour and images are central to how she experiences the world and communicates her ideas.

“I remember images. I remember feelings. I remember experiences.”

Frankie speaks openly about growing up with DLD, the challenges of school and finding a sense of belonging in art and sport. She shares how her visual way of understanding the world helped shape a career creating immersive experiences for audiences around the globe.

Together, Frankie and Shaun explore identity, finding words, the importance of feeling safe and making room for interests that bring us joy. It’s an honest conversation about the difficulties Frankie continues to navigate, alongside the creativity, ambition and possibilities in her life.

She also takes us behind the scenes of developing artwork for the 2026 global DLDday campaign. Frankie describes the challenge of communicating her experience visually, experimenting with ideas and creating something that sparks curiosity. Her hope is that the artwork will encourage people to stop, look and start a conversation about DLD.

As we prepare for DLDday tomorrow, this episode invites us to listen to lived experience and recognise the ideas and contributions people with DLD bring to our communities.

🎧 Listen to The Talking DLD Podcast and share the conversation with a friend, colleague or family member.

You can also help take DLD awareness into public spaces. RADLD’s Make DLD Visible | Billboards for DLD fundraising campaign is raising funds for billboard advertising to introduce DLD to people who may never have heard of it. Please give what you can and share the campaign with your networks.
