Supporting Students with Developmental Language Disorder

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a hidden, but common lifelong condition that makes understanding and talking difficult. It is estimated that 2 children in a class of 30 students will experience DLD, which impacts their academic achievement (Norbury et al., 2016; Ziegenfusz et al., 2022).

DLD is 50 times more prevalent than hearing impairment and five times more prevalent than autism (McGregor, 2020). It is important that all teachers have a strong understanding and awareness of DLD and the strategies to support students with DLD at school.

Course Information

In this short webinar you will be able to:

  • Understand the characteristics and diagnostic criteria of DLD.
  • Identify the challenges students with DLD experience at school.
  • Evaluate potential educational supports to enable access to the curriculum.
  • Contrast the different perspectives of stakeholders and students with DLD.
  • Reflect on a case study to guide these learning objectives.

As part of this professional learning, you’ll be asked to complete two short surveys — one before and one after the training. Each survey will take about 15 minutes and will ask about your current knowledge, attitudes, and practices when supporting students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). The post-survey will also ask for your feedback on the training.

Your responses are anonymous and will help us understand how this training can support teachers in making informed decisions for students with DLD. Once you’ve completed the post-survey, you’ll receive a certificate of completion as a thank you for your participation.
