Tutorial overview

Effective assessment is the foundation of meaningful intervention. This tutorial will equip speech pathologists with practical strategies to confidently assess the language skills of children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), using both standardised and non-standardised approaches.

While standardised assessments are beneficial for diagnosis and funding pathways, they often provide only a snapshot of a child’s communication abilities. Clinicians need to combine these results with insights from non-standardised assessment methods, such as language sampling, dynamic assessment, and structured observations, to develop a holistic understanding of a child’s strengths and needs.

This tutorial will address how to plan, deliver, and integrate findings from multiple assessment sources.  Through a clinical case study, participants will learn how to synthesise data across different types of assessments to build a language profile that informs diagnosis and therapy planning. This session is essential for clinicians seeking to refine their assessment skills, confidently blend standardised and non-standardised data.

This tutorial will be hosted online using Zoom with the recording shared with delegates/ Please book as soon as you’ve decided to avoid missing out!

Learning Objectives

Following completion of the tutorial, clinicians will:

  • Understand the complementary roles of standardised and non-standardised assessments in DLD diagnosis.
  • Learn how to plan an assessment battery that addresses referral concerns and functional communication needs.
  • Gain practical strategies for conducting and analysing language samples and dynamic assessment tasks.
  • Develop skills in integrating and synthesising findings across multiple assessment methods to form a cohesive clinical profile.
  • Confidently translate assessment results into diagnostic and intervention decisions through case-based discussion.
