The DLD Project is excited to bring Dr Trina Spencer and Dr Doug Petersen to Brisbane! Trina and Doug are the developers of Story Champs, CUBED Narrative Assessment, and the Predictive Early Assessment of Reading and Language (PEARL) screener.
This 7.5 hour face-to-face workshop will be hosted at Australian Catholic University (Building 216 Room 2.19) on Wednesday 26 July 2023 from 8:30am – 4:00pm. Please note, this workshop is designed for all language learners and not specifically for children with DLD.
What will the workshop cover?
Narrative intervention is an approach that can help teachers and speech pathologists to be more efficient and effective with learners with diverse language needs. Aside from being a motivating context for language intervention, narratives are personally, culturally, socially, and academically relevant. During the implementation of a narrative intervention, children tell or retell stories while the adult purposefully targets specific language features. In this masterclass, Trina Spencer and Doug Petersen will guide participants to understand the critical and effective elements of narrative interventions while showing video models of and providing hands-on practice using Story Champs, a highly researched narrative intervention program.
Masterclass topics:
- Overview of Story Champs® & Story Champs® materials
- Measuring listening and reading comprehension (with practice)
- Teaching storytelling – the basics (with practice)
- Teaching academic language within storytelling (with practice)
- Extending to writing and exposition

About the facilitators
Trina D. Spencer, PhD, BCBA-D
Dr. Spencer is an associate professor at the Rightpath Research & Innovation Center, University of South Florida. Drawing from speech-language pathology, applied linguistics, education, and behavior analysis, she concentrates her efforts on the oral academic language that serves as a foundation to the reading and writing of primary-age students, with and without disabilities. Her interventions are used broadly in the United States, but also internationally. Dr. Spencer values researcher-practitioner partnerships, community engagement, and cross disciplinary collaborations to accomplish high impact and innovative applied research.
Douglas B. Peterson, PhD
Dr. Petersen researches the measurement of language and reading learning-potential in school-age students, focusing on the development and validation of dynamic assessments and curriculum-based universal screening and progress monitoring assessments that mitigate cultural, linguistic, and environmental bias. He also examines the extent to which data-driven, multi-tiered contextualized language intervention leads to meaningful language and literacy outcomes.
About the DLD project
Extensive and evolving research tells us what works best for people with DLD but unfortunately these learnings and insights sit in the hands of a few. The DLD Project, overcomes these roadblocks by providing an online platform that distributes evidence-based information, resources and training created by contributors from around the globe.
In addition to offering loads of free and paid tools and resources to support the Australian DLD community a portion of the proceeds goes to funding game changing DLD advocacy and research initiatives. Find out more about The DLD Project here.
