The DLD Project’s Delving into Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Australian Tour is coming to Sydney and we would love for you to join us! This 7.5 hour face-to-face workshop will be hosted at the Wesley Conference Centre on Wednesday 12th July 2023.

Our exclusive Sydney based event, will be presented by Shaun Ziegenfusz, researcher, speech pathologist, Co-CEO of The DLD Project and host of The Talking DLD Podcast. Plus, Shaun will be joined by special guest David Kinnane, Principal Speech Pathologist at Banter Speech & Language.

About DLD

1 in 14 people are diagnosed with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) a hidden, but common disability. That’s the equivalent of two children in the average classroom. This condition was previously identified by many labels, including: Specific Language Impairment, Language Disorder, Language Impairment and Language Learning Impairment.
Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) can have difficulties with some or all areas of language, including syntax, morphology, semantics, word finding, pragmatics, discourse and phonology.  Each child will present with strengths and areas of need, which requires an individualised approach.

What will the workshop cover?

DLD is the nationally and internationally accepted term to describe difficulties acquiring language for no known reason. However, clinicians are reporting a lack of confidence using this new terminology in their day-to-day work. This workshop will support clinicians in private practice, education and health with embedding current research into the realities of their clinical practice.

Additionally, clinicians working with children with DLD, and their families often need to plan for individualised interventions and support strategies.  However, there are a wide variety of approaches, tools and training available. So how do you decide what approach to take and when? This workshop will combine current research regarding interventions and strategies with practical examples giving you the skills to apply your learnings in therapy.

At the conclusion of this workshop clinicians will:
  • Understand the current research regarding diagnosing DLD.
  • Have exposure to applying the diagnostic process with case studies.
  • Be familiar with a decision-making framework for language therapy goals.
  • Understand the current evidence for interventions and strategies to support children with DLD.
  • Be familiar with a range of interventions and strategies, as well as how they can be utilised to support outcomes in therapy.
  • Understand how to measure a child’s progress.

Who is the Delving into DLD workshop for?

This workshop has been developed for speech pathologists. However, clinical psychologists and speech pathology students may also consider attending.

About the DLD project

Extensive and evolving research tells us what works best for people with DLD but unfortunately these learnings and insights sit in the hands of a few. The DLD Project, overcomes these roadblocks by providing an online platform that distributes evidence-based information, resources and training created by contributors from around the globe.

In addition to offering loads of free and paid tools and resources to support the Australian DLD community a portion of the proceeds goes to funding game changing DLD advocacy and research initiatives. Find out more about The DLD Project here.
