Tutorial overview

This tutorial equips speech pathologists with practical strategies to confidently navigate the process from assessment to intervention planning for children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). While assessments provide valuable data, clinicians often feel unsure how to translate these results into meaningful goals and evidence-based intervention plans that address the child’s real-world communication needs. In fact, this tutorial was inspired by conversations with experienced clinicians, who still can feel unsure.

Participants will work through a step-by-step approach to:

  • Analyse assessment results to identify functional language targets
  • Formulate goals aligned with the child and family’s needs and context
  • Select intervention approaches and activities
  • Choose outcome measures to track progress

Using a practical case example, participants will learn how to apply this framework in clinical practice, ensuring a streamlined pathway from diagnosis to therapy. While the tutorial will focus on DLD, the skills and frameworks provided can be adapted for a wide range of communication conditions.

This tutorial will be hosted online using Zoom with the recording shared with delegates/ Please book as soon as you’ve decided to avoid missing out!

Learning Objectives

Following completion of the tutorial, clinicians will:

  • Understand how to interpret assessment data to identify functional therapy targets.
  • Use a structured framework to create clear, relevant goals.
  • Select evidence-based intervention approaches that align with the child’s goals and context.
  • Identify meaningful outcome measures to monitor therapy progress.
  • Apply this step-by-step process to a clinical case, with strategies to generalise to other clients.
